Internet Service Types: All Possible Options that You Have

In the USA, we do not get internet connection only through one source. We have a number of internet service types that include DSL, Cable, Satellite, Fiber, and Wireless. Each of these internet service types delivers mind-blowing internet speeds of up to 2,000 Mbps or more.

If you focus your everyday activities, you might find out that you are totally dependent on the internet connection in one way or the other.

The quality and speed of an internet connection depend on the internet service types. For example, every type has its own pros and cons. Let’s get into the core of it and find out the advantages and disadvantages that each internet type will offer you.

Initially, we only had two types of internet connections: dial-up internet connection and broadband internet connection with the best ones coming from spectrum internet packages.

Internet Service Types

Surprisingly, the dial-up internet service types have almost become obsolete and irrelevant today. However, the broadband connections expanded and opened new horizons into the following:

  1. DSL
  2. Cable
  3. Fiber Optic
  4. Satellite

DSL Connection

A Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) connection works in a way that your existing telephone line is responsible for delivering internet to your home or office. It essentially works in the same way but is better and faster than the old dial-up connection. DSL is one of the cheapest internet service types in which the speed reaches as much as 25 Mbps.

However, for areas where the phone lines are relatively fresh, your internet speeds can reach up to 100 Mbps.

Although the DSL system is pretty efficient, the only limitation is that transmission through the phone line has a negative impact on the internet speed as the distance from the operation center to your location increases. The farther away you move, the slower will be your internet speed. Hence, the best solution is to find a DSL-based Internet service provider that is located somehow close to where you live.

DSL ProvidersPricesInternet Speeds
AT&T$45 per monthUp to 100 Mbps
Frontier Communications$49.99 to $79.99 per monthUp to 100 Mbps

Advantages of a DSL Connection

  • Quite affordable packages
  • Wide service availability

Disadvantages of a DSL Connection

  • Low upload speed
  • The limited speed at longer distances from the provider’s operation office

Cable Connection

You get the cable internet through your home or office’s cable connection. Cable infrastructure can transfer a tremendous amount of data at a faster speed. Hence, the cable connections tend to be faster and more reliable – going up to the speed of 100 Mbps. This is how you get excellent speeds on spectrum internet packages.

Since the same cable lines deliver the cable TV, therefore, it is easier for cable internet and cable TV to bundle together. In this way, we can get better options of internet and TV packages.

The cable is a good source, except that you share the same cable infrastructure with your neighbors. Hence, you might experience slower internet speeds during peak hours. However, out of many Internet service types, a lot of people rely on cable internet and tv packages, which can work during off-peak hours. Those who need to use the internet during peak hours should never go with cable connections.

Cable Internet ProvidersPricesInternet Speeds
Comcast or Xfinity$34.99 per monthUp to 100 Mbps
Charter Spectrum$49.99 to $109.99 per monthUp to 940 Mbps

Advantages of Cable Internet Services

  • Good download speed
  • Widely available
  • Bundles with TV packages

Disadvantages of Cable Internet Services

  • Limited upload speed
  • Not suitable during on-peak hours

Fiber Optic Internet

In fiber-optic internet service types, the internet is provided in the form of light flashes through glass fibers. The glass fibers allow the internet signals to transmit at very high speeds. This ensures the quality as well as provides uninterrupted internet service.

The prices of fiber-optic internet are undoubtedly higher than the rest of the internet service types – but still, they are somewhat comparable to the DSL network. Spectrum Internet packages are going to offer a fiber-optic network quite soon!

There is one limitation to using the fiber-optic internet connection, and that is – the fiber optic services are not available in all parts of the USA. Due to the high cost of infrastructure, the services are not reachable to all areas.

The internet service providers are continually striving to make fiber-optic internet available to more areas. Owing to the fact that fiber makes the signals travel at the speed of light, we have unprecedented upload and download speeds.

ProviderPricesTypeInternet Speeds
AT&TMore than $35 per monthFiber0.8 Mbps – 940 Mbps
SpectrumMore than $49.99 per monthHybrid-Fiber Coax100 Mbps – 940 Mbps
FrontierMore than $24.99 per monthFiber6 Mbps – 940 Mbps
XfinityMore than $84.99 per monthFiberUp to 1000 Mbps

Advantages of Fiber-optic Internet

  • Phenomenal download and upload speed

Disadvantages of Fiber-optic Internet

  • Limited availability
  • Expensive services

Satellite Internet Services

Satellite is one of the internet service types that use the transmitters that orbit around the Earth to spread out wireless signals to the ground. It is an excellent option for far-flung and rural areas where cable and fiber-optic are challenging to reach.

Although the speeds are relatively lower – that is, around 20 Mbps, we have the only choice in some far-off areas. That’s the reason why it is not completely obsolete.

Some of the newer satellite providers have relatively lower orbits, which decrease the latency of the internet connection and increase the download and upload speeds. It is a good option if you don’t have any other option available. Otherwise, it’s better to stick with other options – such as DSL, cables such as spectrum internet packages, or fiber-optic.

Advantages of Satellite Internet Services

  • Widely available in rural areas and remote areas as well
  • The providers offer good customer service

Disadvantages of Satellite Internet Services

  • The internet services may lag and show interruptions

Wrapping Up

The internet service types as mentioned above are all outstanding internet services of the USA. Although each service has its pros and cons – if we consider them deeply, we will find out that we need almost all of them under different circumstances. For example, in areas where cable, DSL, or fiber-optic cannot reach, we are making use of the Satellite internet service.

You can have a look at the detailed packages – along with their prices and features on our website. Apart from the internet services alone, you can take the phone, TV and internet bundles as well. In this way, you can save a lot of hassle by switching between providers.
